Our
History Eagle Bank was chartered in 1909 in Jarrell, Texas as the First State Bank of Jarrell. Later, after every bank was calling itself the First State Bank of Wherever, the Bank changed its name to Eagle Bank. The bank did not and has never merged, been bought by another bank, or gone under to have its name reappear as a different bank. The name change was just to stand out from the crowd. In 1909 Austin's population was about 29,000 and there were less than 1000 cars in the city.(!) Austin had just switched to a Mayor and Council form of government, which we still use today, and Congress Avenue had recently been paved. For the first time. Central Texas began to grow, and so did the little Eagle Bank. In the diaster of the Great Depression, when the banks were closing and going under, it was business as usual for Eagle Bank. In fact, even during the Federally mandated "Bank Holidays" when the banks were told to close to stop the runs on the banks and let the scares die down (ala "It's AWonderful Life") Eagle Bank kept its doors open to the public, and had no problems. Cora G, Sexton, the first woman bank president in Texas, and better known as "Miz. Cora" was the president from times immemorial until 1971. She knew each customer personally, and it was standard proceedure for an Eagle Bank customer to stick his head in the door and holler, "Miz Cora, what's my balance?", and she would holler back the answer, many times without having to look it up. Miz Cora also refused to assign account numbers to peoples account, using their names instead. That's right. No account numbers. Finally the Federal Reserve required Eagle Bank to use account numbers (it was causing them headaches) and begrudginly Miz Cora did so. But she still filed everything by name in the bank. After 86 years serving Jarrell, Georgetown, Round Rock, and the North Austin area Eagle Bank decided to start serving Austin proper. Now, with another location at 1509 Guadalupe in the middle of Downtown Austin, Eagle Bank is bringing its Old Time philosophy of personal customer service to all of Austin.
